Solving the Daily Motorcycle Helmet Portability Barrier

Conventional helmets demand 12 to 16 liters of rigid space, causing millions of urban riders to skip protection due to storage inconvenience. AIRVOLT X1 eliminates this friction by rolling down to a compact 16 cm core that slides into a weatherproof 47 cm cylindrical carrying case.

Fundamental Mechanics Formula
W = F · d = ½ m(v_initial² - v_final²)

By increasing cranial stopping distance d from 18 mm to 26 mm through combined pneumatic deflection and liner crush, the average deceleration force F is mathematically reduced by up to ~30%.

Rotational Oblique Impact Mitigation

In real motorcycle crashes, 70%+ of impacts occur at oblique angles, causing destructive rotational acceleration that tears neural axons. The segmented shell allows 8–12 mm of multi-directional shearing to deflect rotational forces away from the brainstem.

AIRVOLT X1 Technical FAQs

Direct answers to common engineering questions regarding the concept.

What is AIRVOLT X1?

AIRVOLT X1 is an open conceptual engineering study for a portable, foldable motorcycle helmet that combines an articulated polycarbonate skeleton with an inflatable TPU cellular cushion to drastically reduce carrying volume.

The project was conceived by Faheem Pappat at WesbondX in Malappuram, Kerala, India. It focuses on tackling the commuter inconvenience problem that prevents millions of riders from carrying certified helmets during urban commutes.

How could an inflatable motorcycle helmet work?

It employs a hybrid mechanism: a rigid, segmented outer shell provides puncture and abrasion resistance, while an internal multi-cell inflatable bladder expands via a miniature gas cartridge to push mechanical locking pins into place, pre-tensioning the protective dome.

Crucially, the air pressure works synergistically with the rigid skeleton. The gas cushion provides pneumatic damping, while the mechanical over-center latches ensure the helmet maintains its protective vault even if pressure fluctuates.

Which materials might be suitable?

Candidate materials include high-impact polycarbonate/ABS blends for the outer shell, high-frequency welded ether-based TPU for the inflatable bladder, helmet-grade EPS/EPP for the energy-absorbing crush zone, and grade 5 titanium or 7075 aluminum for critical hinge pins.

These material selections are preliminary engineering recommendations based on established automotive and aerospace standards. Physical stress testing, thermal cycling, and finite element modeling are required to finalize formulations.

How could impact force be managed?

Impact energy is dissipated through a two-stage mechanism: Phase 1 pneumatic chamber compression dampens the initial impulse shock, followed by Phase 2 controlled plastic deformation of the underlying EPS/EPP liner, which spreads deceleration over an extended stopping distance.

According to the impulse-momentum theorem, extending deceleration distance even by several millimeters can lower the peak G-forces transmitted to the brain below critical concussion and traumatic brain injury (TBI) levels.

What are the main engineering challenges?

The primary challenges are: 1) guaranteeing zero pressure leakage across thousands of folding cycles, 2) preventing penetration at articulated joint seams, 3) handling gas pressure changes across hot and cold climates, and 4) meeting strict ECE 22.06 oblique impact standards.

Each of these challenges is being methodically documented and addressed through mechanical fail-safes (such as labyrinthine overlapping joints and mechanical over-center latches that remain rigid even during pressure loss).

Is AIRVOLT X1 a tested product?

No. AIRVOLT X1 is currently an unvalidated engineering concept. It has not undergone independent drop-tower testing, ballistics trials, or regulatory homologation.

WesbondX strictly adheres to honest technical documentation. We do not claim any simulated or fabricated certifications. The project is an open design exploration seeking academic and industrial research partnerships.

Can the concept currently be used on public roads?

Absolutely not. AIRVOLT X1 is not certified for road use and must never be worn while operating a motorcycle on public roads until fully manufactured, tested, and certified by legal regulatory authorities.

Motorcyclists must only wear helmets certified by recognized regional bodies (such as UN ECE 22.06, DOT FMVSS 218, or BIS IS 4151).
